The Crimson Tide is one of the original powerhouses of NCAA gymnastics and of the SEC, counting six national championships and nine SEC titles. The team was led by Sarah and David Patterson for 36 years before handing the program over in the summer of 2014 to Dana Duckworth, former Alabama gymnast and assistant coach, and Bryan Raschilla. Duckworth and Raschilla led the team to an SEC title during their first season in charge, hence showcasing a seamless transition. In addition to its gymnastics excellence, Alabama draws more fans than most women’s sports teams with an average of 12,000+ in attendance at home competitions, ranking it third behind Utah gymnastics and South Carolina women’s basketball. This attendance was originally fueled by the fiery rivalry between Sarah Patterson and Georgia’s Suzanne Yoculan, thus creating a very anticipated SEC matchup every year. Famous former competitors include 2004 U.S. Olympian Terin Humphrey as well as Ashley Miles, Kayla Hoffman, Andree Pickens, Dee Foster and Penney Hauschild.
